Disabled people – getting on and staying on

The 7 month research project will explore employer perceptions on barriers to work for disabled people.

‘Disabled people – getting on and staying on’ will be coproduced by Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service (SOHAS), Disability Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and Simon Francis (independent consultant).

Research undertaken previously by the partners suggests that there is a general lack of awareness with employers on what issues disabled people face in maintaining their employment.  This has also been highlighted in the recent Health and Work Green paper.

The project will be carried out by disabled people who will engage directly with employers.  This will provide a powerful demonstration of the skills and possibilities of employing disabled people.  ‘Disabled people – getting on and staying on’ will better equip disabled people and their organisations to interface with decision makers, including employers.  The project will increase the self-efficacy and self-esteem of disabled people who will be better placed to navigate the workplace.  New evidence will influence local and national policy.
