Disability Research on Independent Living & Learning (DRILL)

A message from Disability Rights UK, Disability Action Northern Ireland, Disability Wales and Inclusion Scotland.

DRILL (Disability Research in Independent Living and Learning) was a 5 year programme of research and pilot projects run by, for and about disabled people in the UK between 2015 and 2020.

The aim of the project was to create a body of work which explored some of issues affecting disabled people and how they might be resolved. Each project worked with an academic partner to ensure its findings were robustly evaluated. You can find out more detail on each of the projects on the project page.

There are also summaries of each project, sorted by subject area.

You can read the evaluation of the programme here; there’s also an executive summary and an Easy Read version available.

Our thanks go to The National Lottery Community Fund, which funded the programme’s £5 million costs.

Our thanks also go to the hundreds of organisations and partners that took part in DRILL, as well as the thousands of disabled people who helped make it the success it was.

We hope the work funded by DRILL will be part of an enduring legacy that disabled people, service providers and policy makers can build on in the future.
